Are all our SoCal forumites okay?

Neil Peart's house was close to one of the fires, from what I heard. Not sure if it made it or not.

I'm pretty far from those fires in San Diego, but we had a scare the other day when a house a few streets over caught fire. Fortunately they knocked it down pretty quickly, and only the house next to that house sustained some damage.

I saw this pic and knew exactly how close these fires are to all of the pricy homes on the hills from when my daughter lived in the Hollywood area and we visited the pier.

So Ive noticed the '10% contained' etc on the news a lot recently and was wondering how you can put a percentage on how much a fire is contained? Does it mean its 10% put out or that its surrounded by firemen that have stopped its spread by 10%.

God knows

Neither. Something non-combustible, like dirt or a river.

"These control lines, according to a CAL FIRE factsheet on the 2021 Caldor fire, can be natural like rivers or man-made like dug-out firebreaks. “Containment is a measure of the amount of line around a wildfire.” For example, if officials state that a fire is 30% contained, that means barriers have been placed around 30% of its perimeter. “It’s as much a measure of linear footage as it is confidence,” the factsheet says."

Tim Pierce has an update video that shows how they can get the fire to the top of a ridge and then drop the suppression from the air and contain it at the peak. Hope the winds behave and they can get this monster contained.

Winds have behaved the last few days down here in the Southland. That doesn't say much for the valley areas where most of the fires continue. Also since the winds have died down, the air quality is breathable again. For a while it was really nasty with ash over the place.

Have you lost power during these winds? Ours was out for 2.5 days. They may turn it off again if the winds get stronger.

Fortunately no. Could be because I am south of all of the chaos but with Edison, you never know.

Even my place of employment in El Segundo did not lose power for the first 2 days of the fires. Amazingly, LAX continued to receive and dispatch flights.

LAX can operate at low visibility thanks to ILS, and the smoke is well above minimum altitudes for instrument landings.

Aha! cheers
