Any Collective Soul fans? This was interesting. Hmm...

cvogue

Yes, that's Oolong. :)
Went to see Collective Soul at a cool venue right on the water here in San Diego (Humphreys By the Bay if you know the town). I've always liked CS so we decided to check them out.

First of all it was a really good show, guitar wise there was a plethora of guitars used, the lead guitarist mainly used a black Les Paul tuned to drop D and a gold top LP with a funky looking trem on it for other stuff. The rhythm guitarist had a LP the whole time, couldn't hear much of him really and Ed Roland the lead singer and played guitar about half the time, 6 and 12 string acoustics and an electric I didn't recognize. Amps used were Goodsell (apparently made in Atlanta where they're from) and Mahalo.

Ed Roland is a pretty animated front man and sounded good but... and this is where it gets weird... apparently the crowd wasn't reacting the way he wanted them to. It was the usual "sing along with this part" audience participation kind of thing and apparently it wasn't up to his standard. You could hear him say "You guys suck" over the mic. It wasn't said directly into the mic but it picked it up and my wife and I both looked at each other like "Really? WTF?!"

I've never seen something like that before, you'll get the usual "Come on let's hear it! Oh you can do better than that!" type of thing but dissing the audience like that, wow...

Anyway again the show was good other than that moment, they did their hits and did some new stuff that hasn't been released yet that I really liked.

I've read that ER is pretty full of himself and now I find that very easy to believe.

It's gotta suck to go from playing arenas to hauling your own gear into little theaters and clubs. Probably doesn't suck as much as heading into the same office for 50 years like my dad did, but still. Gotta be tough.

I once saw Ozzy walk backstage and refuse to come back out until the crowd were screaming loud enough.

Yup and Axl Rose started shows late all the time (like 3 hours late) but to tell the audience they suck, yowch!

You suck, is something I would say to a friend but, it wouldn't be meant as an insult. Was it like that?

I year ya, when I first moved to San Diego I'd have friends come out to visit and I'd take them to the beach and they'd constantly say "Curt, you suck!!". But I don't think so in this case. The mic was away from his mouth but it picked up his voice.

And it wasn't at a point in the show where it would be taken as a joke.

I dispise most sing alongs.

My first concert was Humble Pie at the Country Club in the San Fernando Valley. The opening bands singer would dance around, stop, then give the crowd the middle finger. I'm not sure why. It was funny though.

That was pre punk no? The punk bands would flip off the crowd spit on them etc...

Weird!

It was around 1981. Looking back, maybe he sensed we were all waiting for Humble Pie to hit the stage.
During Humble Pie, the drummer kept a beat going while rest of the band did a congo around the club, led by Steve Marriott.

They put on a great show but Ed has always seemed like a dick. When I saw him, he yelled at someone for taking video. Jesus.

I only know the blow job song from CS.

Was the sing along him yelling "spit me out", and they were supposed to shout back "swallow"?
