Album Yea or Nay?: Huey Lewis & The News - Sports

Well rehearsed pub band from the 80's that got their label to finance heavy rotation on MTV. There were soooo many more bands of that era that were better in every respect.

I was more into the first two, that I still have on vinyl. Even with that said, I have moved on. The eponymous first one was really a different sound from "The Power of Love" and all that.

EDIT: I probably have Sports on vinyl too. How hipster is that? (not very much, I'd guess.)

Some very solid pop rock on that release - and some killer guitar playing.

And this song is just great....love this take on it as well....

this was the one I listened to more when I was like 19 and in love with college girls. Heard about the band just before they opened for The Police in Seattle.

So you've never read or watched American Psycho then. Do so, you'll enjoy it.

...unless you don't like that sort of thing.

That pretty much sums up the full range of possibility: "So you've never [tried] [insert noun here] then. Do so, you'll enjoy it. ...unless you don't like that sort of thing."

He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
after the years, I prefer to go back to EC's work more often. I would guess you would be right that Huey is more cynical. EC was more heart on his sleeve in that regard I think.

I also throw Joe Jackson in the box with EC. I don't put HL in the same box.

I tend to group Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, and Nick Lowe together. I don't associate Huey Lewis at all with those guys.

By whom?
Completely different levels of writing if you ask me.

Huey wrote some catchy pop tunes, but nothing that is comparable to EC.

Name one of his songs that is even in the same league as 'watching the detectives' 'oliver's army' 'allison' or 'good year for the roses' to name just a few.

I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
