“Billy Corgan is the Richard Nixon of grunge”

Let’s Get Obtuse!
Man, that is a take so good I’m legitimately angry I didn’t think of it.

All those metal bands, garage rock bands, indie rock bands, and emo bands that followed the death of grunge were actually rappers who just happened to play their own instruments. Those Slipknot albums produced by J. Dilla and My Chemical Romance albums produced by Timbaland were total bangers in da club.

We already know what Billy looks like in makeup though.

Also I know 1998 feels like last week to some. But a lot of time has past since Corgan experienced twink death.

Do you think that Corgan’s heel turn was directly related to Courtney doing witchcraft on him and his hair falling out and then he lost his fey fuckable alt chill boy appeal right at the moment when he could have used and abused it the most?

I think it’s all been downhill since Sharon Osbourne refused to manage the Pumpkins in the 1990s.

One of my favorite rock stories came from a Soundgarden article in Rolling Stone at the time SP was touring with them.

Seems the reporter was backstage during sound check times and Billy was bitching at length that he was always put into the background of band photos and that he wasn't the cute one. Kim Thayil (never the cute one) overheard this for a while and then finally had enough and exploded on him about how he had critical acclaim, total artistic freedom in the band and fantastic musicians railing along for it all, but he still wanted to bitch about "NoT bEinG tHe CuTe oNE" when he should just fuck off, perform and be happy.

Later during the show SP had a furious set where it was palpable the stress from before, in a good way. Ben Shepard leaned over to the reporter and said "Kim should really become a tour manager in our off time". :)

See. Total Dick Nixon behavior. Corgan is talented. He works really hard. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and is seemingly never satisfied. These should be assets. But his neediness/insecurity/want/whatever is so curdled and weird that he cannot get over himself or perceived slights. So he becomes this weird grievance monster who pushes people/the audience away and gets mad when people move away.

I've always liked Kim Thayil, and him being so right about him that early on makes me like him more.

Time really has sprinkled that extra bit of spice on that story.

Grunge is perfectly mappable onto the US presidency.

Kurt was JFK.

Dave Grohl -> LBJ.

Scott Weiland -> Gerald Ford.

Ed Vedder -> Jimmy Carter.

Chris Cornell -> Ronald Reagan.
That’s arguably the top 5 of grunge bands. The Billy Pumpkins might not even dent the top ten.

Corgan isn’t just a whiny issue monster in public, he also has an extremely bad rep as as a bully when it comes to being a band leader. He’s worse than Buddy Rich.
