You can only buy Three…..

1981 - Accept - Breaker (German Version Only), Riot - Fire Down Under, Triumph - Allied Forces - Owned all of them!!!
1982 - Priest - Screamin' for Vengence, Rush - Signals, Scorpions - Blackout - Once again, owned them all!!!

In '81, I would've gone for Journey/Foreigner/Styx.
In '82, I probably wouldn't have been into any of those options, but just a couple years later it would be Priest/Scorps/Maiden.

If you throw in a bonus track of Babe, I'll take Styx. I've lost a few friends over that song.

Dennis DeYoung wrote a lot of schmaltzy songs. He seems to lean towards musical theater, rather than rock 'n' roll. But, those corny songs were their biggest hits and made them a very successful band. The success went to DeYoung's head. He became a tyrant, his way or the highway. The band grew tired of his schtick and voted him out.

The guy that replaced Dennis in Styx, Lawrence Gowan, is an incredible talent. He's a fantastic singer, and a much better keyboard player than DeYoung. He had some success as an artist, and song writer, in Canada. But, obviously, his songs never reached as wide an audience as Dennis did with Styx.

Bottom line, chicks dig the song, "Babe." They dug it back in 1981 when I was in high school. Whether you liked or hated Babe, you did not refuse a slow dance with a cute girl when that song got played at a dance.

I stand by my selections earlier in the thread but here are some additional thoughts...

I was 9 and 10 during these years.

From '81 I was and remain familiar with: Paradise Theater, Foreigner 4, Escape, and I Love RnR. That said, I've spent little to no time revisiting these albums in decades.

From '82 the only album with which I have low to no familiarity is A Kiss in the Dreamhouse. My sister got into them for a bit, but that was seemingly more about Siouxsie Sioux's style than real appreciation of the music.

A decent amount of music from 1981 got a bit of second wind in '82 as MTV kept growing and they needed to fill air time. All the singles from most of these albums got major rotation, except for Accept, Saxon, and Riot.

I remember watching MTV so much in the '80s...too much, even though it was supposedly never enough...

I owned 4 from the 1981 group and 7 from the 1982 group, but many of the songs are too cringe worthy to listen to now.

I owned 7 of those, Police, U2, Bowie, Leppard, Metallica, SRV, Dio. I did not get to see the police play live until the reunion tour in 2007. I got to see U2 in concert 3 times. I saw Metallica live once during the Black album tour, Jason Newsted on bass. I saw Dio in concert 2 times.

Since I can only pick 3, I'll go with the Police - Synchronicity, David Bowie - Let's Dance, Metallica - Cliff Burton Kills 'Em All.

@jrockbridge ... yeah, I think I own every single one of those except the Tom Waits (I have one of his but not that one).

If I had to desert Island three of those... Definitely Police... then it gets tough... I would waffle between SRV, Metallica, U2 and Def Leppard..... or cheat and make a Mix tape of the best couple songs off the other 8. :helper:

I wanted to pick U2 but War is not my favorite album by them.

Mixtape

@jrockbridge Joshua? Which one has "Bullet the Blue Sky".... if not, that would take WAR off the table for me as that's my favorite U2 song.
BTBS is from The Joshua Tree album.

One thing I can’t recall in this discussion is exactly when I purchased certain albums. I owned 7 of those albums from 83, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I bought them all the year they were released.

I gave all my vinyl away at one point because of space. I didn’t think I’d be using vinyl any longer at one point. One of the people who I’d given vinyl to offered to give it back when they were moving. Since, I owned a large house by then, I took them back and bought another turntable.

I have piles of Vinyl Albums, CD’s, Cassette Tapes, Mini Discs, VHS, DVD’s, Blu-rays. I’m not sure why I keep them since I now stream music and video.

Holy Diver was the only one I owned from the 83 selection. That was such a kick you in the face hard album at the time. Vinny Appice on Stand Up and Shout. Wow!

82
Rush
I like the Scorpions but, not that album.
Really dislike the rest
While I was an older Scorpions guy, I find Blackout to be one of the finest hard rock album ever. Play it on a good stereo at a decent volume, and it has one banger after another. Arizona is the only stinker on it. It was very well produced. The glass breaking at the end of the title track is epic.
