Music stands and cargo shorts

I'm not in favor of them. But what are ya gonna do?

I've been resistant to shorts for so long. Even when we first started our island/reggae/dance band I wore pants... but eventually I found that shorts worked with the vibe, but I've been stocking up on ones that are flatter so they don't have the big cargo pockets.

I think that shorts work for the Sandbar Bums. I wear cargo shorts a lot, but not on stage. And I now use a laptop instead of the music stand and it is less obvious.

Note to self... Hire GWAR to play at a Wedding.
Best wedding ever!

As you know I wouldn't care if the wedding band wore shorts. I just don't care about that stuff.

I went to a Chamber of Commerce meeting in CR, and everyone including myself were wearing shirts and flip flops. My kind of place.

Music stands are an epic fail....but I still know working bands that use them. No clue why they still get hired. There is even a local 'traditional country' band that in the band flyer they show a photo of the band on stage playing and every member has a music stand in front of them...

IPads are a perfectly good solution to that...but even then only to be used as a quick aid. Our lead singer uses an iPad but he is completely addicted to them and is staring at them half the show. Yuo take a quick glance at the lyric then move away...nope....

I don't like shorts but I guess they work for outdoor festival kinda stuff. I still won't wear them on stage....but I can see them being required for the Sandbar Bums...

Honestly, I consciously acknowledge that shorts go with our theme and are acceptable apparel, but subconsciously it still feels weird to me. I think if I could find the right kind of Tommy Bahama pants or something, I'd feel better about the whole thing.

It really depends on the gig. I used to play lots of outdoor summer gigs where black dickies shorts and Doc Martin boots were acceptable. I've never worn sandals or flipflops on stage except for the summer I worked at a a Club Med in Cancun.

My problem with music stands and iPad are when they are used as a replacement for practice and rehearsal. Some gigs require music stands but the average bar band should not have them onstage at all. It says "we never bothered to learn our music" and typically bands that have those things onstage play with almost no energy or commitment to the music. Having said that I have a private party gig on Saturday where we had to learn so much new music that I doubt we'll ever play again so we are hiding music stands next to the PA stands so they'll be less obtrusive.

Our next gig is a 45 minute set at the Arvada Blues & BBQ festival. Outdoor show.....big stage....at noon. Bass player has already said he is wear shorts. I won't.....
