Question: Anyone know of a rechargeable tuner pedal?

Trying to set up my Boss Katana Gen 3 EX 50 Watt Combo as an all in one live solution but the one thing it is missing to address that is a built in tuner.

To control the Katana I've got a Boss GA-FC EX foot controller into which I plug a Sonicake Momentary Dual footswitch via a stereo to 2 x mono splitter lead, and a M-Audio EX-P Expression Pedal.

All of the pedals and leads fit in the back of the combo, making it an easy carry in, and a simple stage setup running one stereo lead from the GA-FC EX to the Katana and I only need one power outlet for the Katana to run my rig.

One option is to use a clip on tuner which I currently do in rehearsals but I'd prefer to keep that as a back up for live. I'd like to put a tuner pedal/unit on the Katana which I'd plug the wireless into and have a patch lead into the amp from the tuner.

I've got a few bits and pieces which have rechargeable batteries built in and I love being free of needing wall warts and extra power sockets. I'd rather use a built in rechargeable by preference as I carry a power bank with me that could be used if the power got low.

Does any one know of such a device please? Xvive used to make one called the PT-03 apparently but it has been discontinued now unfortunately.

Pretty sure that @Mark Wein was using a pedalboard power supply that was a rechargeable battery bank.

That actually makes a ton of sense on multiple levels.... you can run on battery if needed (weird stage setup, busking, quick grab and go) but even if you're using power, if someone trips on a cord.... boop... you're on "battery backup" for the rest of the set. :baimun:

Here's one from D'Addario

I’m surprised to find out Katana amps do not include built in tuners. Apparently, the new ones can sync with a smart phone via Bluetooth and use 3rd party apps with tuners. Not ideal, but workable in a pinch.

Not having a tuner really is the biggest omission on the amp for me. Even if it was built into the GA-FC footswitch rather than the amp.

This would be the ideal solution but it's discontinued. Like a laptop, I'd be fairly sure that the battery would be knackered on a second hand one.

@jrockbridge and @Bob411 - I used to use 9V rechargeables in my first wireless system. Needed one per 45 minute set and a spare in case. Rechargeables always have a lower voltage output than the disposable equivalents as well, so I have a bit of doubt about that working reliably and why I'd like a new one designed to work with a built in rechargeable battery.

@baimun and @Knox in Box - I've thought about the power bank thing and have a Joyo equivalent of the Engl adapter. It's an option, but as I'm trying to get all the kit on the back of the combo, ideally I'd like one pedal/tuner box and a patch cable on top of the amp and not have to add phone power bank, adapter and power cables to that. From what I can see on the market at the moment it may be the only option however.

I have seen rechargeable tuners with stands but they tend to have inputs only and no output though and I'd need to put this in front of the amp rather than feed it from the line out in order to have silent tuning.

The Reverb listing shows the Xvive PT-03 as “Brand New.” Perhaps it really is new, or the seller thinks it’s new. If it arrived and was obviously used, you’d have the right to return it.

Personally, I don’t get excited about built in rechargeable batteries because they eventually wear out. Then, you have to perform surgery to find out what battery is inside to see if it’s available and worth replacing.

I’d prefer using a tuner that can take rechargeable lithium ion 9v batteries. But, 45 minutes isn’t great if that’s all the time it would last. You’d have to keep unplugging the cable to preserve the battery life which is not a solution. Or you’d have to keep swapping batteries every 45 minutes.

@Gorgon90 Do you own a smart phone? Have you checked out the 3rd party apps that will sync with a Katana via Bluetooth?

Since, I don’t know exactly how that works, I cannot know if it’s a practical solution. Assuming you could leave the app on while using the Katana through speakers, it might be a sensible solution. I imagine placing a small square of Velcro on the back of a phone and one small square on the top of the amp, to keep it from being easily knocked off.

I have a smartphone but I've not investigated that idea. I also don't have one of Boss' Bluetooth adapters that need to be bought separately to enable that functionality in the Katana (which is my 2nd biggest peeve after them not supplying a built in tuner).

Tried searching for the Xvive on Reverb but didn't find it, probably as I'm in the UK.

Suspect I'll buy a mini tuner pedal and use a power bank and adapter to power it at this point.

Speaking of smartphones, have you ever tried an tuner app on your phone? I have no idea how good or horrible they are, I've just seen other people using them. And you couldn't do it completely silent so the phone can hear it.

Also, you keep mentioning the Katana doesn't come with a built in tuner. Are they putting tuners in amps now? Is that a thing? None of my amps have a tuner. Who makes one?

I recall built-in tuners with modeling amps. IIRC Vox Valvetronix amps had tuners built into the amps. I think Line 6 had amp controller floorboards that activated the tuner in the Flextkne and Spider amps.

I’m a tube amp guy. I’ve never had any amp with a built-in tuner.

Maybe, it’s not a common feature with modeling amps. According to Google AI, Orange Crush 35RT, 20RT, Fender Mustang LT25 and Boss Katana 50 MkII EX all have tuners built into the amps.

Ex guitarist in my band had a Blackstar ID series head (which was a modelling amp) that had one.

All the modellers I'm aware of have them and the Katana is basically a modeller built into 1x12" cab with a built in power amp so it seems a strange exclusion.

Thank you too. It all makes sense to me now. I have a Katana too. The Katana is one of my 10? amps, others are either tube or old solid state and that also goes for everybody in my circle. When I first got the Katana, I joined a Facebook group for them and I'm always seeing people complaining that it doesn't have a built in tuner and thinking that's odd. It does make sense, since it already has computer stuff in it already.

I don't know of a rechargeable tuner pedal on its own. All of my battery stuff is powered with a small powerbank or int he case of the Valeton GP5 I keep in my school bag I just plug my phone into it to power it.

My Ampeg has a courtesy outlet on the back. My Katana 100 Gen 2 cab has tons of room to install an outlet, up and out of the way so the "floor of the cab" would still be empty. No idea if Boss just uses the same cabs for 50 and 100 or if the 50 is a lot smaller. If you could, then you could plug a wall wart into it.
