How badly do you cringe when it's time to renew your License Plates?

I know they're not a big deal in some states... even if you get personalized plates.

Indiana sucks ballz.... especially the newer your vehicle is.

My Lexus and Acura were less than $200 each to renew....

... but the plates for our Audi Q5 that I bought last Christmas were Over $450.

The registration itself is only $37.... the majority is excise taxes that slowly goes down as your vehicle ages. Come on!... If this were any other state... the heavier a vehicle is, or the more it pollutes the air... you would pay more... but nope. Indiana makes you pay based on the value of the vehicle.

When you're renewing more than one vehicle and hear the total and it's "Seven hundred and... " and you say "I'm sorry, how much?" and the answer is closer to $800... :annoyed:

Plates are almost nothing here. We do have a personal property tax that comes once a year, but it’s not tied to plate renewal.

Although here in Va you pay a higher plate fee if you drive a hybrid or electric car. Their logic is road upgrades are paid by gas tax and we use less gas.

I get an exemption,so nothing for regular plates.
It would cost $465 without it.

Yeah... just found the online calculator and if I had bought my car in Indiana and paid for 12 months of registration, the cost would have been $608 for my vehicle for the entire year.

I think ours are good for as long as they last but since they aren't stamped steel like they used to be they fadeout and peel away after a while. I( still have mine from 2011 but I'll probably have to get a new one in another couple years.
The tags need to be renewed whenever you go through emmissiuons ( we don't have safety inspections here, only emmissions tests). if your car is OBD2 then you can get a two year tag which is what I do.
My yearly ( every other year since I do two years) breaks down to about 24 dollars to register per year....I drive a 2004. So here the price (as it should be) is that it costs more to register the newer the vehichle...I initially paid like 220 when i bought my 2004 in 2011 :embarrassed:

Oh and for our plates you can just order new ones through the website so it's painless.

Just renewed mine. Alabama taxes autos based on age/value as well.
The 4Runner was still over $200 and the Harley was over $150. Both are 2018 models.
The old 2007 Saturn Vue was only about $40, mostly just registration fee.
My little trailer was $35 which is about as cheap as any tag gets.
The Royal Enfield 650 was around $65 though its a 2020 model I believe, but it was only around $6000 new.

STAMPED? Our plates haven't been three-dimensionally stamped in 10-12 years.

They're really thin metal with reflector type material adhered to it... and it looks like all the numbering and such are screen printed on.

Normally I will renew online... but I wanted to get Notre Dame plates for the Audi like our others and (silly me) I thought they might have them on-hand... nope. They still have to mail them to us. :annoyed:

I don't know what I pay collectively there's a car, truck, and a couple motorcycles that all have 2 year reg renewals due at different times.
My old truck is the only real standout at $350 every two years. I think they base the cost on vehicle type/weight and fuel economy or something.

One thing I like is we don't have the hassle of annual safety inspections like back in PA so that's one less expense and time suck I no longer deal with.

here in oHIo, regular cars cost about $60 for everything, not including plates if you need new ones.
and my office is across the parking lot from the DMV (BMV in ohio), so i just walk across.
usually in and out within 15 minutes.
heavier vehicles/trucks cost more, of course.

I just did the calculation online if I had bought a 2023 Lexus LC500 Coupe....

... the license registration would have been $1,190.35. :shitbricks:

I wonder how much a RR Phantom would be to renew plates in Indiana, if its based on vehicle cost

My 2014 Chevy Cruze has been $110/year here in Michigan.

I don’t think ours have been stamped since 2002 or so and yes like yours they are that reflective stuff. You can imagine how well they hold up in the AZ sun. We have some cars where they are almost just aluminum and completely unreadable

When I lived in Wyoming it was painful. Va. Eats you up in property tax so ordering plates is not to bad.

you do pay penalty if you have an electric car or fuel hybrid because they insist on making up what you don’t pay in fuel tax.

$150 in Illinois for my 2016 Kia Forte. It's fun owning the most stolen car in the US in Chicago. I'm just glad that I have a garage to park in.

Wait, you renew the plates? Not just the registration sticker? Our plates are still stamped at Folsom Prison, for now

My 2008 CR-V is about $150, the 2018 Sedona is about twice that, and the '08 Super Duty is almost $400. Between them and the camp trailer, they hit 4 months in a row. Sucks. But no smog test in our county, so that's nice.

We have an excise tax here in MA that's based on the value of your vehicle. Registration is every 3 years, I think, and it's around $50.

We just get a new sticker every 2 years and it's all done online, even custom plates. I think we pay like $100 a year on the 2 year renewal.
Bringing a vehicle from another state to Florida costs an arm and a leg though.
