Pearl Jam on Stern

Nice interview as far as I have listened so far, and they sound good live on the show. and they nerd out on pedals just a bit at the end. Stern, though, while you wait if you are listening to his stuff before the show, is vile. I do not need to hear endlessly about his wanking.

Anyhow, it was good, and I like what I hear of the new album so far. Let the PJ hate commence!

I saw them live in Denver. It was early years. The venue was small and I'm pretty sure it was The Paramount.

IIRC they had to cancel a show that was scheduled at a theater in Boulder. The Denver show was a makeup for the cancelled show. People who had bought tickets to the cancelled show in Boulder had the option to use their ticket for the Denver makeup or get a refund. A few days before the Denver show a DJ on the radio announced that a few tickets were available. I grabbed 4 tickets. My friend and I each took a girl.

They were great. It was different from their latter shows. No political banter at all.

My music streaming service is trying to make me listen to their new album. I listened to a couple songs. That is not Pearl Jam. Same shit the Pumpkins pulled with the Cir crap. The new PJ album is pure pop garbage and that's coming from someone who actually likes them.

It sounds like the same stuff they've been releasing for like 30 years.

Pure pop would be a huge improvement. They can't seem to write a decent or memorable hook anymore. Like the Foos (or more recently Wilco) they kind of coast on a loyal fanbase that will always buy their next thing because it kind of reminds them of the last.

One of the songs I heard, you could switch Taylor Swift with Eddie and no one would know. If that's not pop I don't know what is.

Which one?

Some of their earlier songs could be Taylor songs. Like Off He Goes, Better Man, Nothingman, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, etc.

The latest Wilco record is actually reasonably alright. Cate Le Bon produced and gave them a little more sonic oomph and tidied up their rangey dad rambling.

Speaking of, Taylor should contact Cate about doing her next LP. Seems to have worked for post Anton Jackoff St. Vincent and could probably work for America’s Fav Ex Girlfriend. She needs an editor and someone who can push her to tighten up her songs. I mean, she was *this close* to writing a great song called “Modern Idiots” and just didn’t bother to write a second draft.

I was told the new PJ was worth listening to. Haven’t made it through it all yet. The boys forgot how to write hooks and riffs apparently. Probably a side effect of viagra and hair dye. However, I’ve not been into them for realsies since Jack Irons left and Matt Soundgarden joined the band. They got a lot stiffer with him behind the kit.

This was off of the new album. I like old PJ. Ten is one of my favorite albums but partly because it came out in my musical formative early years.
I didn't even glance at the title, just hit skip.
