Taylor Swift’s “Cleveland” Steamer

Peen Simmons

Let’s Get Obtuse!
So, if you are familiar with God’s own Internet then you may have encountered people dragging Taylor Swift for being cringe and phoning it in and milking her fans and generally wearing out her welcome. In particular people have been going hard on the petty whinging from your 20 year high school reunion’s most annoying girlboss as found in this “I hate haters” love song about Kansas City’s second best all time tight end.

Curiosity got the better of me and damn if it doesn’t kinda seem like a bit from My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (though not as snappy as the Fountains of Wayne guy’s best stuff).

Is this a parody track? Has Taylor opened a rift in space time where there is no discernible difference between icky sincerity and knowing self send up?

I think the Swift backlash will be a violent wave of steamin punk chicks. Can’t happen soon enough for me.

I've been seeing more younger artists, particularly females, embrace the "fuck you" of punk rock.... like Grace Bowers who is an amazing guitar player, but she grew tired of shredding Hendrix licks and then being gooned by 60 year old men.... so she's pivoted into angsty punk with is both cool and "oh shit, am I supposed to be offended as a guitar player in his 50's who appreciated her for her talent?"

and in case you've never heard her shred... she's the real deal. I caught a live performance by her in Florida and was amazed.

There’s a female fronted electropunk/industrial/hip-hop scene out there simmering just below the mainstream. Wargasm, Harpy, Delilah Bon, Cassyette, Vana, Nova Twins, and that’s just scratching the surface. But the breadth of variety among the artists may be so big that the scene never coalesces and blows up. Kind of like metal—there are lots of bands out there in different subgenres, and they move units as a whole, but nobody ever gets a big enough slice of the pie to break out.

Seeing that 16 year old rocker, Nene Royal, win America's Got Talent and play songs with The Warning and Linkin Park gives me additional hope that rock and roll is in good hands with some of our younger talents! :headbang:
