Mental health check-in

We have seriously discussed retiring there. The country has a lot of problems too, but there was something that for the first time in my life made me feel like I could live somewhere else.
Check out some of the "Expats in Italy" facebook groups for all kinds of advice and useful tips. The more remote you live, the more important learning the language will be. Nothing happens quickly regarding local officials and utilities. If you love Tuscany but not the housing cost and tourism, consider the Perugia region.

Tomorrow is my last day of the school holidays!

It's been great. There's been years where I've quite literally done nothing productive and regretted it but this year I've not had a single wasted day.

- I was fortunate enough to visit France and Belgium to visit WW1 graveyards and battlefields with my dad early on.

- Paraded in Belfast for the 12th. Missed it last year so it's always great to get back to it.

- a week away to a log cabin with Mrs jbj and the dog plus a good few date days scattered throughout

- tonnes done around the garden, 3 summers in it's almost where I'd like it to be

- built a big pergola out the back for chilling out

- read less than I planned to but more than I usually do

- tonnes of cooking on the kamado

- making more progress inside the house DIY wise

- I'm down to my last 3 DJ gigs before hanging up the headphones but every one over the Summer has been brilliant too

It's been great. Roll on Summer 2027 :embarrassed:

My boss is back so I get to go back to doing my real job

Very busy today (Mrs jbj actually text asking if I was OK, which she never does because I'd stayed on so late) tomorrow will be the same, if not busier, then the kids come back on Thursday.

New milestone, post-second cancer (I'm cancer-free but all kinds of fucked up by the treatment, for both, including significant anger and negative self-image issues after second one, though these are entirely internalized): clinical notes now contain "He denies SI/HI."

So I reckon the neighbors are safe. iykyk

This has been a hell of a battle on several fronts. You're an inspiration. I fear I won't have the fight in me when it's my turn, but I guess you don't know until you face it.

Well, at least I'm learning lots of new medical terminology and abbreviations. I (or possibly a barber) recently made the mistake of nicking my earlobe (I'm guessing) on the "radiation side" of my head (where I'm now missing a lot of lymph nodes removed by surgery), and I got an infection that spread from there into my ear canal and down into my neck. So, perichondritis, otitis externa, cellulitis, respectively. I already knew about cellulitis from many years ago, where it landed me in hospital for several days. This time just an overnight in the ER, but at least I got a room. There were dozens of people on gurneys in hallways.

I was familiar with "ideation" terminology from day gig (family law, occasionally requires reviewing parents' court-ordered psych evals) but had to google "SI/HI."

Well, since my surgery I've had some good days, and had some bad days. Gutters and strikes, as you will.

I cut myself off from alcohol completely following the surgery, I figured mixing that with the ibuprofen and/or norco would be bad, as well as inflammation issues. Fast forward a week, swelling has gone down, quit taking meds (pain from the surgery is minimal, the PT is what hurts), so picked up some beers. I still can't drive, so this was on the way home from a follow-up appt, asked my driver if we could stop by the store. Hell, at this point even my wife was offering to get beers for me still. So I finish those over a couple of days and then go dry again. Then wife goes to Costco, I ask if she can pick up some beer, she says sure, comes home with a 28 pack of Sam Adams Octoberfest.

Now, I had every intention of stretching that out, but ended up plowing through most of it in 2 days. Then picked up a 12 pack while out with the father in law (this was Tuesday) and called a friend from work to see if I could stop by while the kids did karate. Still can't drive, so riding along with the wife. I walk over to my friend's house from the dojo (already pretty buzzed) and proceed to have a few more. Well, by the time we get home I'm completely smashed, and just pass out on the couch where I've been sleeping anyway for arm/sling purposes.

That was the last straw. And it's not the first time it's been an issue, but it sounds like this is the last time. So I'm drying out, again, and it's all for the best I know. I still have resentment and anger over how it was handled but honestly I think I needed the ultimatum as a wake-up. I've made it pretty far on spite before ("oh yeah, you think I can't do this?"), and that was how I handled the first few days for sure, but now it just feels different. I'm absolutely positive not being able to drive anywhere right now is helping.

Anyway, tl;dr I'm on day 6 of quitting alcohol after 25 years of pretty much daily drinking and so far so good. Relationship is going to take some mending, that's to be expected. In other news, I've got a couple therapy sessions booked, so that should help, along with some other issues :thwap:
