Gig Report: Ouch!

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
I'm finishing up with the DJing come September. Last night was my 5th last gig.

It's up in Aberdeen *spits* so I decide to book a nice nearby hotel I've gigged and stayed at a few years ago, pap the dog to a friend then Mrs jbj and I can have a nice weekend away since this is my last long distance gig.

The night is awesome - very cool venue with history dating back to The Crusades and Templars. Couple are amazing, guests are very drunk but absolutely no issues. Loads of good tunes etc.

I'm packing things down and a lady comes up to me - "sorry to annoy you, the bride said you're staying at the same hotel as us. We can't get a taxi is there any chance you could take my husband and I home?"

I only have space for 1 person once everything is loaded up so I say I'll take them to the hotel then pop back to tear down. it's only adding 20 minutes onto what at this point is 13 hours of being on the road and working so I'm not going to leave them stranded.

Unsure if it was the 4 solid hours working the pedals on the drive up,dancing and bouncing around during the gig, a small rock I slipped on or a combination of all 3 but as I made my way to the car I felt a pop and my right calf has gone. I just about managed to stay upright. Got them home and then got my kit down VERY slowly and with a lot of pain.

Dr Google makes it sound like a grade 1 tear so not the end of the world but it hurts like a mofo and I'm hobbling around like I've sh*t my pants.

Date day in Aberdeen to see the Odyssey and have cocktails and steak has been cancelled. We're sitting in our room with snacks, pot noodles and booze watching crap on my MacBook instead.

Some friends of mine are touring Scotland right now under the name Ordinary Elephant if you come across that name, you should check them out. Folk duo, great songs, beautiful harmonies, and cool instrumentation.

Random tendon tear out of nowhere Mojo. Had that once just bending down to take a photo, Achilles tendon. At our age, it's not just a 3 day thing anymore.

Much mojo. Two words: KT tape. Many seasons I'll get a bad strain or low-grain tear on my left calf and I've found that KT tape really helps support the calf muscle and ease the strain (and pain). There are a bunch of videos on how to do it. I've found this one particularly useful when the old gastrocnemius is acting up:

Not sure what your health care situation is like, but i'm headed in for surgery at the end of the month for a biceps tendon tear. Both the occupational health doctor and the surgeon agree it's a good idea, so I'm running with it. They said if I was old and retired it would matter less, but since I'm "young" and "active" ( ) it's best to have the procedure done.

Had a listen and really dig that. Unfortunately the only gig that would make sense geographically is Edinburgh next Monday and we're away for the week.

Dunno what their finances are like on tour but the Grand Sheraton around from where they're gigging has a rooftop spa and pool. It's not cheap but is amazing.

Sitting out the back with the BBQ on listening to them with Mrs jbj and a pal. Really good stuff.

They threw in a biceps release for a tear when I had my rotator cuff repaired. As far as I can tell, there hasn't been any negative consequence.
