I've built plenty from scracth, even etc my own boards. the build your own are very good starters. Don't just figure out how to solder, learn. A bad solder joint may not show itself for a while. That will drive you nuts.

what age range is this geared for? I want to teach my 7 year old how to play.

Thanks for the cool site. I am getting inspired to go back and learn some of the stuff I should have learned 20 years ago. I guess it's never too late.
