2019 Baseball Thread

I am also assuming that every major league team has been stealing signs with video ever since a camera was placed in center field.

some teams are just doing it better.

Marlins are probably stealing signs, too, but who cares.

Stealing signs still can't help you hit a curve ball :cop:

Of course it can. Half the battle is knowing a curve is coming. Batters often are sitting on a particular pitch, whether it be a fastball, slider, curve, whatever. Pitchers pick and choose what pitch they will make on a certain pitch count, or other situational factor. Knowing a curve is coming is extremely valuable info. Any MLB player can hit a curve ball. Catching up to a 99mph heater is much more difficult, but still much easier when you KNOW it is coming.

Maybe. Most teams just do it the old fashioned way (runner on second) which limits in situ cheating. They can talk about it in the dugout, but it's a lot harder to transfer signs from a runner to the bench to hitters.

Doing it with a camera / monitor implicates the entire team in the scheme, which they all know is illegal. A player stealing a sign from base is legal.

runner on second puts his hand on his knee - fast ball. dangles his hands - off speed.

doesn't have to go through the dugout.

True. But again that is legal. And visible. People watch for that, especially catchers. Instant mound visit and signals change.

Well, the good news is I'll be able to buy cheap seat tickets and sit in the pricey Field Box seats again since they'll suck for the next few years. We really enjoyed doing this before the fucking sunny day fans packed the ball park.
The more I think about it, the less I want to watch this team. The players who I respected were doing this, and it is heart breaking to see guys who didn't need to cheat, do it.

so is this why the Assholes were such a great hitting team....because they knew what pitches were coming ?

Grapevine says the Rays are next (after the Red Sox) to get investigated. I would also imagine that there will be a fair bit of "who is/isn't" speculation. The penalties are just too severe to keep stiff upper lips.

Red Sox fans are disappointed and disgusted and want Cora gone (and he'll be fired once the suspension is announced, so there's no doubt about having to pay him). If it's shown that they cheated during the post-season, I also wouldn't object to vacating their title. Cora comes off terribly in this - organized it in one place, brought it to another.

Baseball is full of crap, however: the 'sign stealing scandal' is a joke compared to Bud "I know nussink!" Selig's elephant-sized lump of steroids under the MLB rug for a dozen plus years.

Astros owner Jim Crane reveals team's new name and jersey.

Black Sox, for those who don't recognize it.

Yeah, except that roids were not against the rules for much of that time.

Well, yes, they were; they were banned specifically in 1991 (which is well before the Bonds/Sosa/McGwire ... )

.... Oh, wait a minute. I see. Bonds. Bay Area.

Never mind.

The MLB steroid policy was adopted in 2002. The memo Fay Vincent sent out in 1991 had no rules change to back it up. So steroids were not against MLB rules until the 2002 collective bargaining agreement. That is why Barry was never suspended for failing a test, because he didn't. He was only accused of lying to congress about what he may or may not have done before the rules were put into effect.

Sorry if the facts don't float your bias. You were probably watching hockey.

Playing to Mets fans? LOLOLOLOL ...

... on a less fictitious note, I think the 'Stros and Red Sox titles ought to be vacated if Manfred really wants to scare teams into not screwing around.

I gave up the Mets two years ago and don’t care who wins anymore, so long as it’s not the Yankees or Phillies. :embarrassed:

I agree.

The facts don't pick teams. FWIW I can't stand the Mets. Or Yanks. Or Sox, or.....
