Weekend wrapup

Still drowning. Last week had four school gigs with my students (including one I needed to play for) and two of my own on top of everything else.

Friday the golf cart died. Yeah, first world problems. And we had an invasion of fire ants over the weekend (possibly caused by all the landscaping work we had done recently along one side of the house). The bloody ants got into our bedroom closet!?! No food there, so they were eating a yoga mat.

Anyway the golf cart guys will pick it up for repair this week and the exterminator is coming also, so hopefully that crap will be sorted out soon.

Other than that, normalness abounded. Lots of good guitar playing happened. Here's a magic turtle that was guarding the green on #11 yesterday:

No DG. Just wanted to chill and started working on one of my guitars. Doing some minor fretwork on the high side as some of the frets are a little high. In the afternoon went to a backyard party jam. Left after a few hours as I started to get ear fatigue. Either people can't hear or still think louder means better - sigh.

On Sunday played some DG in the morning. Napped and did some minor yard work.

Non-eventful. Flu and covid shot Thursday. Didn’t get sick but didn’t feel right until Sunday. Played a lot of guitar using the compressor I now love. Walked the dogs, read, watching the Sopranos again. Today I’m at the VA to go over my iron levels since April. Didn’t like my ferritin levels so gonna dump 400cc’s I didn’t expect to.

Nothing crazy…

Had a gig friday night… was a small rural bar, but we had a few dozen fans from the lake area show up which is always nice. I had a dude I used to work with saw the FB notice and came out to see us for the first time which was super cool.

Two AM drive home in rolling fog wasn’t a great time, but got to sleep in a bit on Saturday.

Saturday was Notre Dame game at Corby’s Bar in South Bend… and Sunday was laundry, groceries, and Indiana Fever on TV.

Friday night I went to the open mic at Lost Towns. It was a strange night, with a couple of horrible acts; the two ahead of me were good, but very laid back and depressing. I decided to ditch what I had planned and instead played Casey Jones and voluntarily played Brown Eyed Girl. I love that song, and so did the audience; they joined in on the sha la las.

Saturday morning we went to North Brookfield (there is West, North, and East Brookfield as well as Brookfield) to check out a new business there. We started the morning with breakfast at a neat little cafe that opened there. They are really trying to make it a community place. I discovered it last week; they have a variety of gluten-free bakery items that Carol can eat. Then we went to Brookfield Orchard to check out the store there. They have books by local authors, crafts, and antiques as well as apples and apple-related products. From there we went to the Shaman's Closet; a gift shop with antiques and collectibles and, as the name might suggest, some new-agey stuff. When we left there I took a back way home and discovered a little trailer that was made to look like a caboose; they sell hot dogs there Tuesday through Friday. Unexpected in a residential area. I was tired by the time we got home; that is the most walking/standing that I have done since last July.

Luckily I was rested when we went to a nearby theater Saturday night to see a show called Rave On. They started as a Buddy Holly tribute act; they now do songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The group was really tight, with a bit of humor thrown in. There were five people who took turns singing lead, with great harmonies. The lead guitar player was good, but sometimes her guitar got buried in the mix. The front man is married to the female backup singer; when she came up front to sing lead the first time it became obvious that she was quite pregnant. Her voice was amazing; she did some Aretha and some Janis and you could almost imagine they were in the room. I liked everything they did, other than Obla Di, Ola Da. (It could have been worse; they could have done Maxwell's Silver Hammer...) It was a great end for a great day.

Sunday, I went to church even though I only got about 2 hours of sleep. Then I went to the AT&T store and got a new phone; my old one stopped charging and it was time for an upgrade. I also rested a good bit. It was a fun weekend.

Went and saw a buddy of mine play. First concert since before the pandemic. It was great (he's an amazing player and the opening act was quite good too) but it sucks to go to a concert alone. That said he's probably the only person I would go and see solo. Had a chance to catch up with him before and after the show.
Thought about going riding as my back isn't terrible these days. But am going on a 16 hour drive Wednesday so thought it might be a bad idea to temp fate so I just took it easy (again/still). Once I get up to BHam I'm getting the gravel bike back out

My weekend started on Thursday because I felt like a mule kicked me in the head and I had to miss work. My body reacted dramatically to antibiotics that I started taking for a UTI. I watched TV and recovered.

Friday, I was feeling normal. So, I ran errands.

Saturday, I drove to Walsenburg and Sanford Colorado for work. Walsenburg had a big forest fire a few years back. I drove past the burn scar and the plants in the soil looked vibrant. I recall learning that forest fires end up putting rich nutrients back into the soil. There was nothing particularly appealing about either place to me, but I took a few pics of the Walsenburg burn area, horses in a field in Sanford, and a point of interest on the drive back home.

Friday, I watched NFL. The Broncos finally won a game. Yay team!
