The Biking Thread

Thanks Steve

The rain came earlier than expected this morning so no attempt to go out anyways. And since we are supposed to get a fair amount of rain I don’t think I’ll be trying it this year now since I expect it to be muddy for a while. The part I was on is heavily treed so I saw and went over roots in the little bit I was on. Don’t know about rocks but given your apprehension and the fact that unlike you I and a complete novice on those trails I will avoid them and stick to the paths I am familiar with. I was/am planning to ask a LBS when I get a chance. There are two entrances to Galbraith and the north is much closer and easier to get to for me. Maybe I have to go to the south one‍♂️ I tried to figure it out online but asking is best. I did ask a couple of MTBers the other day and they said it’s fun on a gravel bike...but then again they don’t know my skill level and I don’t know what they mean by fun

Saw your zwift ride..nice, South Pacific island

Thanks Steve

Thinking I will be in Switzerland today. *looks*. Nope, looks like Paris, or somewhere in France today. Smoky outside in Idaho, so Zwift it is!

I just think the riding position is better on the more upright mountain bike for anything that isn't relatively smooth. You have to be down on your drops for good control, and wouldn't want to get the weight too far forward with no where to go and absorb down there, if it were bumpy.

Sitting upright with the ability to "stand on the pegs" like a motorized dirt bike is better suited for anything rough at all, IMO. I am guessing @Tig agrees?

That’s kind of what I was experiencing when I decided to chicken out, the best control position didn’t seem to offer a lot of control. I imagine others would have no problems but it wasn’t something I was used to and foresaw broken bones in my immediate future if I continued

A 68° riding in shorts kind of day.

Yesterday was 43 when I left for my ride...in shorts  I did one in Bham at 35...that was cutting it a bit close to my limit. But I'm glad that I won't be riding for a few days it looks like since we are finally getting a decent storm. It's been over a year since I've missed many days riding around here and we desperately need the rain so I'm good with the break :thu:

I haven't raced a crit (criterium) in years, but this guy's youtube video pretty much sums up the experience for a fit, but average racer. Lots of pain and suffering. Back in my racing days I preferred road races (long courses, lot of climbing, best climbers usually win) over crits (lots of laps around a small, flat course, best sprinters usually win).

I signed up for the RPI (Rebecca’s Private Idaho gravel bike race) today, with some buddies. The 56 mile version.

Also, did 38.5 with over 3200 feet elevation gained (up and down a lot, one roads by the water. Steep bursts). Good for my head, heart and body.

Over 3200 feet gained. Steep and short typically. Couple of decent size grades. And those were steepish. Average speed was not all that. But I wasn't trying to make it all that either.

Around here I tend to have to do some big ups/downs to get that kind of elevation. I think I'd find the short steep ones like on your ride preferable. The ones I take can be a real grind (like 5 miles worth of straight uphills). With those climbs I don't get a break for like an hour and then the downhill is 20 min of terror (potentially anyways :P)

Wow, has no one been riding? Nobody has posted since I did way back in February. Let’s start getting out there!

Today, did a little ride from home on the road to a short normally MTB loop we did on the gravel bikes today. These are not technical trails, except of a couple little rocky spots we walked. I ride those on my normal MTB, but no taking that risk on a fully rigid bike with drop bars. It was a fun ride!

the green stuff is just waking up, and will stay pretty green, for a little while anyway.

There’s my friend and neighbor, Jeff, catching up at the top.

Nope pretty much every other day I ride. So often there is really no point at posting  Nice trail you have there. I keep putting in a lot of miles because once again this year there has been really no weather to stop me, which isn't good for the upcoming fire season but if the weather's nice I'll ride so what can you do?

Took my neighbor, who got a new gravel bike, on a 28 miler south of town out in west up to a mine, then back down to the valley down a sandy mining double track, then back home. With unexpected head wind. He was spent. But a good ride.
