Shooting out the Epiphone vs Gibson 339 tonight

One of my students had an Epiphone 339 that had been decapitated by his dog a few months ago...he bought a replacement an then a screaming deal came up on the Gibson version so he bought that too...I got to try both instruments out tonight in his lesson.

The main differences are that the neck on the Gibson just FEELS better...like more time was taken with it..the Epi is kind of a baseball bat. The other is that the pickups in the Epiphone sound like there is a pillow in front of the guitar...no midrange to be found. The Gibson just sounds more balanced although I thought the bridge pickup was a little weak.

Epibuckers are well known for that muffled sound. Seems like the crack team in the marketing department ought to come up with a catchphrase for that tone and promote it.

lol. The Gibson is definitely a better instrument. For $1500. For the $2600 they are asking new I'd rather find something else.

I have wanted the Gibson for years. I passed on one in the early '00s and wished I bought it, then I stopped gigging and had kids so I couldn't justify the cash on one. Then when the EPi's were announced I thought I was going to get one because they were affordable. Then I played one. I never even plugged it in, the neck was terrible.

I didn't like epi's 339. I did like the Epi ultra 339, though. Haven't played the Gibson yet. I love the size/shape of those guitars.

I can tell which one is which from the body shots. Look at the f hole in relation to the selector switch. Plus the epi is way too shiny. Probably loaded to the gills with poly.

what i've taken from this thread:

Epiphone: not worth the wood it's made out of.

Gibson: not worth the asking price.

sounds about right.
