Shohei Ohtani!!!

Andrew Sak

Even Andy Deserves Good BEans
Last night, the Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani became the first player in the history of Major League Baseball to be in the 50/50 club. That means over 50 homeruns and 50 stolen bases in the same year. Regular season games only.
He did it in dramatic fashion. He went 6 for 6 with 3 homeruns, 2 doubles, 10 runs batted in, and 2 stolen bases. He tried stretching a double into a triple, but was tagged out. Had He been safe, he would have hit for the cycle last night. That's a single, double, triple, and homerun in the same game.

*the Dodgers also clinched a playoff spot last night.

Shohei created this 50/50 club while recovering from Tommy John surgery. That's surgery on a tendon in his throwing arm. Look out when this guy resumes being one of the best pitchers in the game too.

Shohei Ohtani hails from Japan. He plays like he's from out of this world!

I mean I don't watch baseball at all for the last 20 some years, but really? A pitcher that can bat that well was unheard of back in my day, or was that just a cliche?

I don't recall an every day hitter ever being a starting pitcher. Maybe Babe Ruth? He's top tier in everything he does on the field.

his game yesterday was unreal. You could make a real argument that that is the best single game anyone has ever had in the history of major league baseball, especially if you consider the context of it being the game where he creates the 50/50 club.

He's excellent, but you don't keep pitching to the guy if you're playing smart baseball.

I'm not saying this is the case, but it's almost like MLB wanted him to hit all these crazy milestones last night. The Marlins' manager is an idiot. Teams like his should be playing for spoilers, not bolstering the stats of division leaders...let alone all-star future hall of famers.

There's never been a reason they can't be, it just hadn't been done in nearly a century, so it became the standard to not have pitchers hit or good hitters also be pitchers. Hell, the American League even created the DH to avoid having pitchers bat until the World Series on away games.

Ron Guidry was said to be one of the best outfielders many scouts had seen, and a great hitter, but with his arm it was always going to be pitching and the DH theoretically protected that arm. As to Ohtani, I can't figure out how batting every game isn't affecting his TJ surgery recovery. All this shit is connected, seems extremely risky despite how the season has played out for him.

If you pitch around Ohtani you still gotta deal with Mookie Betts. And the Marlins suck.

Even though they beat my beloved Braves tonight

But yeah I don't know how his TJ recovery isn't impacted by this. Like you said all that stuff is connected.

They shouldn't have pitched to most of the team yesterday. They won 20-4.
He hit another HR tonight. 55/55?
*Stolen base too. 52/52

Here's the Dodgers 50/50 game rbi stats.

And he wins a World Series title in his first year with the Dodgers! And he will pitch next year! As a Dodgers fan, that was fun.
It was tough watching Ohtani in those last few games though. He shouldn't have been out there after dislocating his shoulder.

He did not have a good Series, but the Dodgers pulled it off without his hitting. Congrats LA!
He dislocated his shoulder in game 2 of the World Series. He was a decoy after that. He ran a few times after the injury, and had to hold his bad arm with his good like a sling. He couldn't swing like he can when healthy. He was taking lots of pain pills for the pain. He really should not have been out there in my opinion.

*Had he been healthy, I think he would have had some big hits.
