Ordered an … Overdrive again! No tubescreamer this time.

JHS has their sale going and I had been interested in the Morning Glory, as I have wanted a Bluesbreaker type circuit. Hit the trigger. I have some tubescreamer variants (a clone with lots of options, Bad Monkey, such like that) but never really liked them all THAT much. Figured I would try this out with the fifty bucks off.

Go ahead, tell me why I’m stupid.

Congrats on the Morning Glory! think a Blues Breaker type is a good addition to an OD collection.

I have an Analogman KOT that is probably similar. I have it on my Nano board along with an AM Sunface fuzz and a VFE Merman, which is similar to a Klon type OD circuit.

I was never super happy with any Tube Screamer type of pedal until I ended up with a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive Mod. In fact, I won that pedal back when Mark ran a contest to boost membership here, during the early months of Wein forum. The Clean blend turned out to be the thing that fixed the circuit for me. I set the amp dirty, blend in some Clean signal in the Sparkle and I’m good on the 808 setting. The other Mod voicings are cool but I’d be fine with the simpler Sparkle Drive circuit which only has the 808 but I don’t think they even make that version anymore. Also, there are other versions of TS pedals that include a clean blend. One bad thing is that the Sparkle DM is not a very attractive pedal.

HNPD!

Was looking at that too. With the 25% off and points I can get it for $25 out of pocket. I have Tube Screamers, Klones, and Boss SD-1, would be that much different of an over drive? I'm a Tube Screamer fan and kick a Klon clone on top and it's great.

Well, there are different levels of drive available on the JHS and I think it sounds a little different, based on some videos. I was wanting something approximating that King of Tone / Bluesbreaker range. But here is a vid or two.

Also it appears that the SD-1 has a mid-hump, which the Morning Glory does not. Per this anyway.

“So, what does it sound like? Well, for starters, the tone profile of an SD-1 features a mid “hump.” This means there is a midrange boost while the bass and treble get pulled back slightly. Played into a clean guitar amp, the SD-1 yields a warm, creamy, soft-clipping tone. It has a natural, amp-like compression and dynamics in the vein of classic British sounds. The SD-1 been a mainstay on the Edge’s pedalboard since its release along with the OD-2 Turbo Overdrive.”

And you indicate you like TubeSceamers, which definitely have a mid hump. So yeah, I am guessing you would find the JHS Morning Glory to be different, and not like your others.

I was wanting to get away from the TS mid-hump and sound with this pedal.

I always perceived that all my TS circuits had a dramatic mid hump and a lot of compression. That’s why I like the Clean blend which I use to, effectively reduce both.

I know my KOT is loosely based on a Blues Breaker circuit. But, I don’t know, exactly, how the EQ curve compares to other stomps based on the same circuit. I don’t hear a dramatic mid hump and the compression is slight, which feels more natural than a typical TS. However, I do think it has a slight midrange boost. And, I perceive a slight mid boost in other BB derivatives, at least, in the clips I’ve heard. I think it just seems like a mid boost is absent compared to a TS.
