Open box as ‘new’

Ya know how a lot of stores have pedals pulled out of the box for display?

Not a big deal. Right?
Sometimes they haven’t even been used. Just put in the showcase to garner attention.

If the pedal has a registration process tied to it, ask for a new-in-box or just walk away and tell them why.

I drove 45 kms (each way) pick up the nearest IK Tonex pedal in stock.

I had to pull the box off of the cabinet beside cash because I was the only person tall enough to reach it.

The sales guy asked if it was okay to open the box to get the serial number. I was good with that.

It was not sealed. The plastic bag that the pedal was in was ripped open.

I should have refused it, but see the sentence above about it not being a big deal.

Yeah, it won’t register because someone already registered it. Likely just to get the free downloads.

I let the store know and I put in a ticket with IK Multimedia just to make sure that I don’t miss out on the promo downloads that end on Jan 1.

IK is rough with their registration. I ended up changing my login creds and giving them to the dude I sold mine to.

Agreed.

They just replied and will try to work with IK to get it deregistered so that I can register it.

I’m going to keep things going with IK, because they’ll be able to honour the promo.

I don’t really want to shame the store, but it’s a Canadian ‘chain’ store.

There is a process to deregister gear, but I’m pretty sure that it would only apply to the gear. Any associated software downloads and promos would not transfer.

I bought it when it first came out. You could de-register, but you had to own it for 60 days or something stupid like that before someone else could register.

That does seem like an odd metric. Most would figure out they don’t like it quicker than that.

The store manager got IK to deregister it and I was able to get the pedal registered, and I got all of the software that goes with it, including the ODS Legends pack.
