New tubes for my DRRI.....

My Deluxe Reverb Reissue is way overdue new tubes. I just called the local tube guru (Lord Valve on the net) and he just saved me some cash. Explained that I don't need to replace all the tubes since the rectifier tubes usually last 20 + years and I don't use the normal channel - just the reverb channel. Plus he will keep it overnight and bias it for free for me. I may do the speaker replacement now as well since he stocks speakers as well. And I can do that myself.

I think I'll go after I get home tonight...

cool. how much?

If I wrote the numbers down right....I need two 6V6 (Tungsol - $21.00 ea) and IIRC two 12AX7 (NOS Phillips @ $17.00 ea). So just under $80.00. I'm also impressed because he could have easily sold me a complete set and I would have bought them. Plus this guy has a national reputation for knowing his stuff as far as tube amps go.

I'll see what speakers he recommends and/or carries when I am there.

Amp is at the techs shop - which looks like is has not been cleaned in years. Seriously - he has a small warehouse with cases of tubes and amps and speakers all over the place. I asked him about a replacement speaker that would be good he scratches his head and says - 'Well - let me see what I have around here. I'm not quite sure...'.

not so good.

I love the greenback in mine and I think the Hellatone speakers are the same speaker but broken in and cheaper.

That is the thing that puzzles me, why would it be cheaper....after all the speaker is said to be broken in for just 15 hours  and made by Celestion.

He is a seriously good amp tech, just not particularly organized. His shop looked just like this when he resurrected my old Fender Champ about 5 years ago.

And as for the disarray of the shop...

The local amp guy here, who can work MIRACLES on any piece of electronics you give him, used to work out of a tiny trailor in his back yard. The thing was stacked from floor to ceiling with stuff and the only thing that wasn't a total wreck was the small workbench where he did the tech work.

He always finds what he needs to fix stuff though.

Sounds similar to this guys - except he has a bit more room. You can barely walk in the shop but he has vintage amps all over the place in there. It took him about 5 minutes to find a clipboard to get me my call tag for the amp.

What shop?

That's exactly what it is. By slapping their own label over the Celestion label and selling it as a Hellatone, they get around the MAP for Celestion.

Interesting because I would prefer to break in my own speaker, but to each there own. The other thing is that it could be Celestion designed??? That is similar to the Duncan designed pickups. Not truly Duncan's but just designed by them.

Well, I think celestion moved almost their entire line up to Chinese factories a few years ago, so most, if not all of their line up is celestion designed and made in China, regardless of the branding. Try to find a celestion loudspeaker for sale new with made in England on the back. I can't comment if the Chinese made models are any different than the UK models, as all my amps are old enough to have the original UK versions in them, but the street price didn't drop much, if at all (extra profit, I suppose).

I recently bought Century Vintage 60 which is still "Made in England" and my son used it at Mark's blues class today. Took it out of my stealth cab to give it a whirl in one of my Theile Port cabs.

I guess the century vintage lineup is still made in the UK. Thanks for the pic Saint. I know a good number of the other models are not. Again, I have no idea if it matters or not in terms of the sound.

For me it does and I really don't know why - maybe cork sniffing . As for the sound of it in my cab, I love it. It is much cleaner and more defined than say a 25W Greenback. Greenback IMO have a nice warmth to it. The Vintage seems to have more definition and it is much cleaner sounding. As I use it more I will get more accustomed to it.

What I have found is that all of the Chinese made speaker seem to be below the $130 price range - strange but true for most. This one cost me $160 from Amazon and I really like it. Once again, still getting used to it.
