MCR Rockman

I have the box
Saw a namm video where they just butchered it. Andy on the other hand seems to have dialed it in.

MCR? I did not know My Chemical Romance had their own Rockman model. Cool.

I had the original. First effect I ever owned besides a wah. Used to run it in front of my old Peavey, one side into each channel.
Power supply crapped out sometime in the early 90s and I trashed it during a move.
Didnt really miss it, made everything sound like Boston, lol.

One of the weird things to me was that Scholz's/Boston's guitars always sounded like they were trying to cop Brian May's sounds without the breadth, depth, dynamics, and expressiveness. It was always too safe and correct sounding, while Brian had a real voice and painted so many more details than Tom could ever imagine.

It's a very canned sound, one that you seemingly can't really shape. As such, it's not very appealing.

Expensive little one trick pony. $253.
I don’t understand how a pedal that has a signature clean, signature drive and chorus, as well as eq tweaks within those signature sounds, is a “one trick pony.” Tom Shultz came up with his preferred signature sounds and bottled them in a circuit. Those sounds have been used on various recordings in multiple genres. At the very least, it’s a 3 trick pony.

Expensive? By today’s standards it’s not particularly pricey for a truly unique circuit. There are overdrive pedals based on a Tube Screamer circuit that are more expensive, as well as others less expensive. There are circuits based a Klon Centaur that are more expensive, as well as cheaper. It would be more accurate to say that it’s mid priced.

I’m not going to rush out buy one. But, I think the “expensive - one trick pony” characterization is inaccurate.

It can do Boston, Def Lepord, Zz Top and noise. First 3 are damn near the same with the fingers being the difference. Noise is noise. From the demos I’ve watched if that’s not dialed into that thing it’s noise. I watched one where they were all smiles saying how great it was and it was literally shit.

It’s not for everyone. It’s Tom’s signature sounds. Megadeth recorded their debut album using a Rockman. Many Meat Puppet songs were recorded with an X100.

Get a true one trick pony. Buy a TS.

Frankly I got sick of that heavily processed area rock sound pretty fast.
For about 10 years there it was blasting from every redneck jalopy in Alabama.
Not something I really want to revisit.
