Kauer introduces a new body style

Doug Kauer has been in the lab cooking up something new. He calls it the Gripen. To me it looks like the offspring of an Explorer and a Casio DG-20.

Gripen (grip-in): Swedish for Awesome. (Not really ). I have been dying to show you this joint design by myself (Doug) and believe it or not Max Kauer! Max asked me to draw a guitar for a project of his and I famously can not draw a guitar by hand and somehow we ended up with this idea. Beyond proud of this, we decided to build it as a neck-thru since we are quite good at that and it would allow for the aggressive nature of the cutaway and upper horn without the stability problems a set neck or bolt on may have. We have some amazing combos to show you over the next week and already have a collection on trucks to dealers.

I dig it. I’d be inclined to dig it more in a natural finish or maybe dolled up in a glammy retro look like the St. Vincent Goldie.

From what I’m seeing, these angular, aggressively boxy looks are coming into vogue in fancy guitar land.

It is intriguing, and the silverburst suits it. It does look like the strap button placement would make it awkward to play, but it probably isn't as bad as I think. I wouldn't buy it, but I think it is a cool design.

Looks suspiciously like this one that Ben from Crimson Guitars built in 2020
