Just bought a Fancy mic... No phantom power.

This means I have to leave my warm house ... AFTER WORK.

Do phantom power uhhhh packs? I guess.. make a difference?

Thought my pod hd500x would be sci fi enough to power a mic. I FEEL BETRAYED BY THE FUTURE.

anyway...
Into the north east dusk I go.

Went through the wealth of old posts here and I came up with a 2 prong strategery.

I got the phantom power pack. Wasn't too bad. And I got it running through my pod hd500x (what a dumb name) using a classic preamp for vocals. It's not fine tuned but wow is it an improvement over singing into my Shure 57 beta. Which was a hell of an improvement over my RadioShack stick computer mic I wrote my golden oldies with.

I also bought a Scarlett 2i2 after seeing a lot of praise for it on here. So it'll be an easier set up for vocal recordings and if I wanted to just play 1 mic.

So thanks for all your input!

I won a Scarlett 2i2 from Truefire in a drawing. Let me know how you like it. I've used a Line6 Studio GX for years but want to learn to record multiple tracks and hope the Scarlett will inspire me to put in some effort.

Phantom powered condenser mics vs regular dynamic mics are kind of like the difference between active and passive guitar pickups. The internals need power applied to them instead of just being part of a signal chain like a dynamic mic.

Condenser mics usually have wider dynamic range and are much crisper... but they're not the best for live use because they're very sensitive to moisture and can be more fragile. That's why they're usually in a studio behind a breath (and spit) screen.

For live use, just use the Beta 58 without the 48v power.

But there's no difference between phantom power source except voltage, Right? Like ac adapters

Yes. Depends on the mic. Older phantom power were 12 or 24 volts... but most current ones are 48 volts. It mostly depends on the power requirements of the mic you are using.

I have an older preamp that can power my mic, shape the sound, and then I can dial in a blend of tube or solid state preamp to warm or crisp up the sound. (all the XLRs are on the back)

Okay. I went w 48. (I even read that in a manual. ) I just got a small stomp box looking thing with no stompy bits. Just XLR in XLR out and a power pack.

Tonight I'll try through the 2i2 unless I am exhausted from work. . Well.. maybe just the sound of crying/snoring then
