Josh H Scott vs John Nathan Cordy

Both these guys have YT channels. And, obviously, Josh owns JHS pedals.

It's ok if you hate Josh because of the ancient Devi Ever controversy, or that awful church he associated with a long time ago. Personally, I have more ire for Devi Ever taking people's GoFundMe money under false pretenses.

John NC is a good player, derivative of famous, great players. Plenty of people seem to hate the guy. He's not the sharpest person.

I have watched these guys videos here and there. Typically, I fast forward through a lot to get the info I seek. But, I appreciate the effort both put into content that I don't pay a dime to access. And, I think we all benefit from the existence of JHS. I think we benefit from competition in the marketplace even if we never buy a JHS pedal. So, far, I have not bought anything from JHS, but I would if they had something I wanted.

The controversy happened when JHS put out a video about discontinuing and closing out the ROSS line of pedals, announcing the $79 blowout. Josh mentioned that his average cost to make the ROSS pedals was about $76 which he would sell to dealers at roughly (?$95-$125?) IIRC. Dealers were guaranteed 35%-45% profit margin if they sold the pedals at list of $189.

John NC watched the JHS video, took one of his JHS fuzz pedals apart, and made a bunch of assumptions about profit. The title and subject of his video was "Are pedal companies ripping us off?" Clickbait strategy for sure.

Josh at JHS made a rebuttal video, responding to the John NC video. Josh went into even more detail about costs and profit.

John NC made an apology video in response to the JHS rebuttal. Controversy contributes to clicks. :bigg:

Josh Scott is a standup guy. The amount he gives back to the community in terms of promoting other companies' products and free instructional videos on pedal building/circuit analysis is incredible. There's a reason why every major small-business pedal company (Keeley, Wampler, EQD, etc) always have nothing but positive things to say about him. That controversy in the past was really blown out of proportion and taken out of context in an age of internet lynch-mods.

Although I'm happy JNC made an apology video, he kind of loses a lot of points by starting the thing out immediately with a sponsored ad and was sure to make the video long enough to include multiple mid-roll ads in it.

True. I appreciate Josh.

Josh makes money from his pedal business. JNC is making his money mainly from his YT channel, so I can’t say I blame him for being sponsored. But, advertising in an apology video is tacky and bad form. JNC starts ALL his videos with that Truefire commercial, so they must be his main sponsor. I fast forward through the advertising and a lot of JNC’s playing. :bigg:

I watched Josh's video today. I enjoyed it.
I won't give the other guy the view statistics because I'm petty like that but I like Josh. Sure, Josh made some mistakes in the past, but he's also gone a long way towards correcting them. I feel like people can't see past the initial mistake.

In an odd way I feel this slight (again, slight) guilt about not buying more stuff from JHS because I like the sounds his pedals make and he's a good guy, but I often already have something that does what his stuff does or he doesn't make what I'm looking for. I do have a NotAKlon, though, and I love that thing, and I have purchased other stuff after watching his videos.

It just gets old that people just seem to use negativity as clickbait for views. I get that clickbait itself is a necessary evil for getting views on YouTube due to the algorithm these days, but it could be positive clickbait.

I haven't watched any of the vids mentioned, but I've enjoyed content from both those guys. Also, I'm a subscriber to JNC's channel because he's a good player and does a lot of good stuff with modelers.

I’ve only watched Josh’s video and as soon as I heard what JNC was saying in the first clip shown, I knew where it was going.
He was ill-informed about how things work. Not just the pedal business but business in general.

He may have just been reacting to the mention of the cost of manufacturing the Ross pedals and the fire sale price, but if that’s true, THAT is the problem. Reaction without understanding.
Anyway, he got some clicks. Not mine as I found his voice a bit annoying. I’m tired though. So, easily annoyed.

Coming on Friday — JHS limited release pedal called the Hot Beef. It will be some famous drive circuit designed by someone else 30 years ago with a slightly modified tone stack. $199 sold direct and out of stock in 5 minutes. Buy it from a scalper for $400 the next day. John Nathan Cordy is gonna be on the livestream along with Brian Wampler and Paul Gilbert.

Listened to Josh’s whole bit. Obvs his points are correct—it’s just basic Business 101 stuff. It would be surprising that Cordy was so clueless, but musicians (and influencers and other lay folks) are often kinda dumb/inexperienced when it comes to nut and bolts “how the world works” stuff.

I find Josh’s whole “I’m the mayor of guitar stuff” personally a little tiresome, but he’s clearly knowledgeable. He seems like a very Kansas City guy, and that’s probably why he gets on my nerves a little.

I think JNC really showed his ass not even estimating payroll, taxes, benefits, rent, etc. As if Josh is getting rich liquidating a failed pedal line for cost because there secretly must be some profit built in. Total dingus.

In that video JNC comes across as spectacularly clueless in the ways of business.

'Hey, two eggs cost 50 cents, two slices of bread costs 25 cents, why does this diner charge me $3.99 for two fried eggs and toast?'

He should be cringing at himself.

JNC seems naive about a lot of things. He can play guitar and he's a fan of Line 6 Helix including HX Stomp. Since, I own an HX Stomp, I've gotten some good tips for settings from his channel.

It would have been better had the video continued as a question and not his confidently incorrect declarations.

I've been turned off by the over-produced nature of JHS vids for some time, so this was much easier for me to watch. I'm always in for a good ol' internet slapfight, and this one has a clear winner.
