If you could improve one thing about your guitar playing, what would it be?

I really should learn how to do some basic lead work. I have spent 40+ years playing "folk rhythm" and would love to do more soloing.

i need to get back into the reading stuff i was doing last year. completely dropped it. i liked the improvements i was making.

I've been working out of this book a few times a week:

I really like how he approaches teaching rhythmic reading. I need to spend more time in it though. I have a rehearsal this afternoon with the sight reading group and it's been getting easier the more I plow through this book.

i'd like to get the Berklee Curriculum for how their books are supposed to fit together. i dig the Method i have, but i sure could use other books i'm not going to read.

Actually, when it comes to lead work, I like a more electric sound. The flatpicking might be a good start, though.
what

Probably depends on what you eventually want to sound like although I'm startting to think that a little flatpicking would good for everyone.

Improvising leads and licks.

I play great rythmn and if I sit down and learn it, I can do some really good soloing but when it comes to improvising solos I feel quite limited. I'd imagine bothering my ass to properly learn some basic scales would help no end :embarrassed:

getting my hands synchronized.

one always wants to go faster than the other...
the left one's the troublemaker, I think.
but it doesn't bother me enough to actually work on it.

ONE thing? Right now I feel that if I knew the entire fretboard that would open up my soloing AND chord comping too. I bought but haven't worked with the Fretboard Workout. :(

OK, I would say the main thing for me is hearing in my head what I want to hear from my fingers, since the fingers tend get a mind of their own... Other than that, getting off my ass and doing more recording...

My whole game needs a lot of work but lead work is something I cant get a handle on. Especially improvising. I have learned some solos and can do it but that's not really the same as being able to really play.

Sight and Chart reading. Playing in a variety band that spawned from the Jazz meetups has helped to get me started again. It's funny because my funk chops are coming back again and a nice change from chuga-chuga-chuga. The bummer though is that my hands and arms tire becuase of either two much or too little motion. As long as I don't get needles or numbness, all is good. If I do, only rest will help.

Whats funny is that I'm having to work on my metal rhythm guitar playing a little...we were playing The Trooper in class yesterday and playing the rhythm guitar up to speed was more of a challenge than I thought it would be.

Consistency.
Consistency and phrasing.
Ruthless efficiency and an almost fanatical devotion to the pope.

Wait.

OK, phrasing. I'm trying hard to get away from just playing the beat and adding a little flair to my phrasing.
