Check that bass line…
Tom played EVERTHING on the records, except Brad's voice.Amazing bass line, but based on this video he lacks any semblance of pocket or groove. No wonder he didn't play on the record.

One of the tracks on the debut used a drummer...not Sib Hashian, but another guy. I wanna say it was on the song 'Rock And Roll Band'. I think the guy was going to be the bands drummer, but the record company told Tom to find another guy. Maybe he didnt have that 'look' the industry goes for?Tom played EVERTHING on the records, except Brad's voice.![]()
At least it's what I've heard listening to some youtube interviews. One of the tracks on the debut used a drummer...not Sib Hashian, but another guy. I've no idea who played what on the Don't Look Back album. Probably almost all Tom again.
Found it on wiki, and I know I've seen it on interviews on youtube, that Jim Masdea played the drums on the album version of Rock And Roll Band:everything i've ever found (from Tom) is that the first 2 albums, plus a couple songs on the third, were recorded in Tom's basement studio, long before there was a band. he was working on this project for several years before the band happened. he was a senior project engineer at Polaroid and would come in at like 10 am (because he was up until 2 am recording) and nobody really cared because the work he was doing for them was seriously out there.
he still holds several patents from those days.
but he was doing all that pretty much by himself and well before the band existed.
the band was hired to play live, more or less.

did you see the part in one of the vids i posted where tom has a ton of pieces of tape that he spliced out because he didn't like the way the drums sounded/were played, and spliced in a ton of parts that HE played, instead?Found it on wiki, and I know I've seen it on interviews on youtube, that Jim Masdea played the drums on the album version of Rock And Roll Band:

The song does sound very different from the rest of the tracks on the debut. I've always thought so![]()
