Gibson launchs $999 PAF set.

Some punch lines

There better be a complementary jar of Grey Pupon in that case

Do you realize you can buy half a Klon for that?

That's not a lifestyle, that's a load of crap!

I'm waiting for the reliced version.

Warranty void if installed, touched, looked at.

What we need, see, is the most historically accurate replica of a famously inconsistent hand wound pickup manufactured using a variety of different magnet types with who knows how many winds per pickup that occasionally shipped from the factory in guitars with out of phase sets that lead to super inconsistent sounds. We super need to fetishize the sound of a guitar that was discontinued two years after the magic year of 1959. ONLY A GIBSON IS GOOD ENOUGH.

All this had nothing to do with the musical skills and sonic inventiveness of Clapton, Bloomfield, Green, Richards, Page, and a bunch of other pasty drug users. It’s the magic pickups, see.

Well, the case is pretty damn cool :embarrassed: Honestly though, you have other companies like Throbak selling similar PAF sets for $799 so $999 isn’t too much of a stretch. I think they sold out very quickly, I’d like to hear some demos/comparisons.

I love when guitar mags do shootouts with audio clips of these "authentic" PAFs and they all sound different.
To be fair, there was great variance with the OG PAF’s. So in that regard there should be a lot of difference(s) if the companies are basing their own sets on a particular set. I wonder if there will be variance with these or if they were shooting for consistency w/ all of them.

Yeah, I know, right?

That's the ridiculous part of the old ones. They are literally the proverbial box of chocolates. Take a similarly wound humbuggy from ebay for 10 bucks and change out different alnico bars and you'll have your choice of tones all over the board for cheap. The rest is mostly hokum.

And then of course it all comes down to the particular guitar they’re in, it’s hard to know sometimes if whichever set will sound good in whichever particular guitar. It’s a bad and often expensive rabbit hole to go down and one that I generally don’t bother with. But it also doesn’t bother me if someone wants to spend $1000 on pickups, no one’s forcing anyone to buy anything and Gibson is charging what the market will bear.

You say that like a normal person that's going to put the pickups in their guitar. You have to think of these as an action figure. Number one rule for those is, don't break the seal, don't open the box and play with it. Schrodinger's pickups will be both the best and worst 1959 had to offer.
