Did you own a boombox? Show me your boombox.

Duller than cardboard
I had one of these when I was a kid in Germany. This thing ate D-cell batteries like that was its entire purpose in the universe, but I could pull in Radio Luxembourg and BBC and it had short-wave capability too.

I think that I had a Panasonic from Kmart. It has a five band graphic equalizer and detachable speakers. I probably listened to Slippery When Wet a thousand times on that thing.

Team Aiwa! This has been our work boom box for a couple of decades. The radio works. The 3 cd carousel doesn't. We use it with our Sirius XM radio for the DINA amp and the 2 still very capable Aiwa speakers.

I have a Sony 2 cassette 1 cd player in the garage.

Not a big fancy, loud one, but it did have dual tape deck which was awesome for copying tapes. My mates and I spent hours recording from the radio and made and exchanged mixtapes. It was a big thing from 4th or 5th grade on when we got bored with football and fighting. I still have many of those tapes, but they are pretty worn out.

I had one in my bedroom when I was really little, but it was mostly used for audiobooks on cassette.

When I started getting obsessive with music, boomboxes were on their way out and the Sony Walkman was hitting their peak.

My strongest memories with a boombox was my grandfather. He had one of those massive JVC models that he’d take it camping or doing woodwork in the garage or if he was painting the house outdoors, shit like that.

In hindsight, it was a ridiculous purchase, given that 95% of its usage was BBC Radio 1. He must have spent a small fortune on batteries.

Last week we were in downtown walking to get ice cream after eating out. Some guy was peddling his bicycle back and forth down the main drag holding a huge bluetooth speaker (easily the size of a bigger boom box) blasting out his tunes while he rode. They first thing I thought about was the whole boombox craze.

And no, I never had one.

I’ve had several growing up in the 70’s and 80’s.

portable music became headphones only.

i bought a used Harmon Kardon Onyx Studio a few years ago. It has bass like no other. Rechargable, Bl
uetooth discus shaped thing.

I’m moving my lab to a new space across town. I’m still deciding whether to keep this beauty I inherited 23 years ago. Not very good bass response for sure.

i had a shitty GPX. the main thing i remember about it was that the speaker cones smelled terrible. like rotting food.

I never had one as a primary music source.
I bought my Mom and Dad a nice Sony cassette/radio/ cd in the 90s that I inherited when they passed. It stays in my music room if I need to listen to a cd or tape.
I also have a tiny cheap one, cassettes & radio, couple of 2” speakers. I keep batteries in it for emergencies when the power goes out. It’s come in handy in a few tornado outbreaks and snowstorms.
Not at home right now so sorry no pics.
