Challenged by my daughter's friend...(guitar content)

Id be happy to do a little wing tutorial, but id feel weird doing it here at home. Ill do it if i get a day at the house alone.

And the Weinster's right, i can see how this thread might look bad to someone who's on their first visit to the forum. But cfgsteak took things a little too personal imo, he misunderstood me. Sweet home alabama is just one of those songs that your gonna get asked to play so often you might as well learn it, this thread is proof of that.

No one has to learn anything because "XXXXX is just one of those songs that your gonna get asked to play so often you might as well learn it".

I've been playing for 25 years and working as a player for 20 of them. That statement might make sense for someone like me since I do cover gigs all of the time (I'll be playing that very song in a bar about 14 hours from this post, I'm sure) but teaching for 21 of those years has taught me that people pick up the guitar for all sorts of reasons and have all sorts of expectations about what they can or can not do with the guitar. For some folks its just about the quiet enjoyment of playing the music they actually like to listen to. It's not their job with deadlines or expectations or any of that. And if over a few years worth of playing the guitar like that they never get around to a song that they never liked listening to in the first place or that it might have a few technical issues that they haven't encountered yet in the music they've played to that point rubbing their nose in the fact that they haven't learned something that is easy for YOU doesn't make any sense, and is likely to either discourage the person from try to step outside of their normal music or discourage them from playing altogether. That's not the idea behind this website or forum and reading through this thread this morning I'm a little horrified about the fact that we had a minor shit-storm over a fucking question about a Lynnrd Skynerd song.

Um... did mine help? I've never taken a formal lesson in my life, nor ever taught anyone... so I can only describe how the doodly-doodlies are in my head.

It's definitely more "in the spirit" of things...it took me a second to understand where you were going wit the "t"'s and "EE"'s :)

I was just posting my thoughts on it, sorry. And i guess i only think its worth learning because i DO get asked to play it all the time, along with back in black and little wing, a few others, etc.

Just because it gets requisted alot doesn't make it required learning, point taken. And what you said about people playing for all kinds of reasons is very true, i ponted out that he sounds like someone who uses the guitar as an inspiration for writing songs, something i know shamefully little about myself. Let me make something clear, i don't pick on people over this kind of shit. Iv had people tell me "dude so and so puts you to shame joe" and trust me, i know how it feels. I didn't mean for their to be a shit-storm, i just opened my mouth and next thing i knew cfgsteak was calling me an asshole.

Yeah... I don't always think of things in the conventional manner.

I think it's something I pictured after hearing Frank Gambale (or maybe Satriani) say something about "Circular Picking" and I thought "What the fu...?" So I imagined that the downstrokes and upstrokes were not hitting the string in the exact same spot... kind of like drawing little circles.

But when you're playing a song, and thinking about the words.. it's more like writing letters across the strings with your pick... so the downstrokes go across the top of the letter T, those upstroke are the little middle part of the "E".

Stuff like Reggae with big upstrokes would be downstrokes like the bottom of a letter L and upstrokes being the top of a T.

If teaching guitar becomes something you want to do you'll need to think about the students point of view a bit more. If I was teaching in a college where someone was paying $500 a unit and getting a degree out of the experience I would be quite a bit more on top of them about what they "need" to learn but I don't. I teach all ages and all levels of experience. I can be a drill instructor on students who are in bands or want to go on to music school. Only a few of my adult students are serious about taking things to the next level and the rest are playing for enjoyment, though. It's a very important escape from their real life responsibilities. You can't project your expectations on them like that because then you are creating the stress they are trying to dissipate by playing guitar in the first place. Then you are ruining something that is important to them.

Sometimes the unconventional visualization stuff is very effective, though. I use stuff like that all of the time with my students but it helps to be able to demonstrate it in front of them...

Ok, ill work on that.

I don't really even think its commendable to be the guy who can play everything in the first place, so im sorry if it seemed that way. Whats happening here happens to me alot in real life, and no matter what i do there's always a few people who think im a totally ego-driven douchebag who wants to outplay everyone, when in fact im the same as everyone else, i just play what i play for fun......which happens to include playing for the occasional stoned redneck who shows up at my house alot. And thats where i learned the ac/dc and skynerd stuff. I don't think ill be a teacher anytime soon, but thanks for the advice all the same. I know iv got some stuff i need to work on personality-wise before i look into teaching and im in no hurry, really.

It's just like anything in life. Try to understand your context.

Hybrid picking is your friend with the sweet home :thu:

As much as I hybrid pick for everything else this is one song where I don't....do you do it during the intro?

Hybrid? You mean "Chickin' Pickin' with the ring or middle finger?

Seems like the notes wouldn't have the same "bounce"... but maybe if it was played on a Tele instead of a Les Paul or Strat.

I was reading the tab wrong. The videos helped spot my error.

Thanks for the advice. Its not difficult, I was just playing the wrong notes...

get yer own music, son.

Oh, i noodle around and make stuff up all the time. And i probably won't be playing any southern rock for a long, long time on account of my dad going blind. He had a brain tumor removed in 08' and the pressure being removed from his optic nerves pretty much destroyed his vision, so his old friends don't come around anymore except to help with house repairs. We still get drunken calls from the occasional random asshole now and again though.
