Can someone identify this mystery chord?

Odd, that's what I thought from listening to the song. However, once I saw that video, I became convinced it wasn't a C, and playing a C started sounding wrong. I guess that's the power of suggestion.

Anyway, thanks guys!

Definitely....

Which makes sense. that progressions is 1 | 5 | 6 | 4. See what happens when I have to use Nashville Numbers now.....

I have totally embraced the Nashville chord system.

The only place I still really get fucked up is when I'm doing funk songs with a bunch of 7th chords in it :embarrassed:

Well, I may not have been wrong about the C major not being right. I found this video that pretty clearly shows Nesmith playing an A minor. Not that he couldn't have changed it over the years.

Oh, BTW, thanks for enduring more Mike Nesmith and the Monkees than you probably ever wanted to hear. I've been trying to motivate myself into getting back into playing, and I was hoping that revisiting the reason I picked up a guitar to begin with might re-kindle a bit of the old flame.

The Monkees had some excellent writing and Nesmith is a very talented dude.

I agree. I think that Don Kirschner put together some excellent pop tunes for the Monkees. I also think that Nesmith was doing some great stuff with his group of studio musicians.

Mike Nesmith is the reason that I picked a guitar up. When you are a six year old, the Monkees were just SO cool, and Nesmith even more so.

Nesmith's a cool songwriter. If the only thing he'd ever written was 'Different Drum' that would be enough by itself to be proud.
