Help! Best place to sell guitars now is?

I want to sell a couple electrics. I will either buy a nice octave mandolin or put the money aside towards a single top shelf electric. I have not decided which yet.

I am going to use Craig's List and try to sell them locally, but it has been awhile since I sold any gear. While I prefer not to ship, I might try Reverb again if I get no nibbles locally (which generally I don't).

What medium do you use to sell gear that gets good results?

i dont do much selling but i prefer trading in at a GC or local shop. sure you don't get as much but one can certainly put a price on meeting randoms from CL or fb marketplace and my time is def worth it. or dealing with shipping or paypal or buyers being dumb and filing disputes or any of that other nonsense. GC gives you 15% off if you trade something in and buy something new so that helps to offset it a little.

walk in, walk out, call it a day.

Yeah - but GC will only give you 40% of what they think they can sell it for. That is too little. And GC does not carry anything I am interested in buying, so a trade is out of the question.

I haven't tried it yet, but take a look at Sweetwater's new gear exchange...

I was going to mention this. I haven't tried it yet either, but if you take your payment in a gift card, there are no fees. I'm not sure how that plays out in the 1099 world, you technically aren't getting cash, so I don't think you'd get a 1099 for the sale.
I've had good luck with CL. Sold a few things this year on it.

I used to use Reverb a ton, but avoid it now due to the increased fees. I will list things on craigslist first, but some things that are maybe a little more niche will tend to sit there even if I have them priced well. If I don’t have luck on craigslist after a few weeks, then and only then will I reluctantly turn back to Reverb.

There are no great places to sell guitars. I use Craigslist, OfferUp, and FB Marketplace. I only deal in cash, and only face to face. Always in public. Reverb and eBay are too damn expensive and have too much BS. If I want to get rid of several things at once, I have a small network of local music resellers that I work with. I'll usually get more than GC, but not as much as if I sell them myself locally. But sometimes the tradeoff of convivence makes up for the loss of cash. I will sell some things through forums. But I don't like to ship if I don't have to. I will sell small things like pickups on Reverb, but that's about it.

I just looked at that. Bad news....they have pretty much the exact guitar I am after used for $1K less than new because of a few dings. I always pay cash for everything, and I have the cash, but I'm not sure I want to buy it before I sell the gear to cover it's price tag.

How much does CME give? Any better than GC?

Obviously at work for me. Just sold two guitars in two days and have the one guy interested in a second one.

I’ve probably sold more to CME than I’ve ever bought from them over the years. Their buyers tend to be fairer than GC and it’s a pretty smooth process. Of course you’re going to make more money selling it yourself, but if you’re looking for a quick turnaround and/or if you’re selling something weird/niche/nonstandard it’s worth doing. Plus, if you can carry it in, you get to avoid the hassle of shipping in an online sale.
