Antonin Scalia has died at 79

the justice Scalia was found dead in his hotel room this morning.

please do not make this thread political, BUT.......this could be a very big game changer for the forseeable future.

He was legendary around DC for being an angry man. I hope he's at peace. I feel bad about how excited I am to see the politics shake out.

R.I.P.

I wouldn't have wished this on the man, but I'd have been goddamn euphoric for his retirement.

To quote Philip Larkin:

“I regret (his) death as I regret the death of any man, but I can’t conceal the fact that it leaves... a vast, blessed silence.”

I suppose the fireworks can wait until the appointment of a successor.

Well, this will be an interesting few months in D.C.

there's all kinds of thoughts going on that. the senate could hold off until after the election, but it would leave the court at 8, so a tie vote would be possible on the court.

this opening on the court will SURELY bring the fireworks in DC.
(like we need more of that)

At 79, I guess we can rule out hookers and blow. Then again, he was from Trenton, New Jersey. :embarrassed:

Doh! Brainfart on my part.
I knew that there was one, but I could not come up with his name to save my life.

And my wife (a reformed lawyer who follows the SCOTUS for fun) was out shopping when this happened, and I was so excited to tell her that I somehow phrased it in a way that made her think he was assassinated or something.

I'm thinking the GOP debate tonight will be either highly explosive or everyone will be walking on eggshells. I'm tuning in.

Let us try to avoid a brown squall over this. We all know Scalia was a conservative voice on the court. I get that some people were very opposed to his interpretation of the law, and this is fine, just as it is fine that others may have agreed with Scalia. None of this impacts one's ability to post on a guitar forum productively. People have already begun to post things indicating their own feelings about his passing and politics, and I'm OK with that, but let us try to not turn this into a giant shit storm where people start personally bagging on one another over this.

And, yes, this is going to make for an interesting year and election cycle. I would guess Obama will get the chance to get a nominee through before he steps down, making his last year about as far from a historically lame duck presidency as is possible.
