I never liked regular mini humbuckers. To me, they are the worst of both the humbucker and single coil worlds. They don't provide the sparkle of single coils, and they don't provide the growl of humbuckers. But, they seem to be relatively popular, so what do I know?

Note that I'm talking about regular minis, not the Firebird minis which have a very unique sound.

Oh, also, I have a special similar to that (even has the bound fingerboard which is rare for specials). I don't know if it is the same on all specials, but on mine the frets were finished with a flat tops. The frets had pretty much a square cross section. I bought a fret file and gave them a properly rounded shape. It made the guitar much more playable.

I have a love/hate thing with all mini-hums and non-standard buckers…including all the permutations of filtertrons, etc. Some days they’re the best pickups you ever heard. And the next day they sound like crap. Finicky. Tricky to dial in so they play nice with yr rig.

But I’ve gone down that path more than once because when they sound good…
