Dig it! New Modeller - Lekato Cube Baby.

Gorgon90

Harmonic Dive Bomber
I bought this about a month ago but haven't had time to post about it in until now.

  • It cost just £36 on ebay!
  • Sounded good at rehearsal using a line into the PA. I could happily gig with this if my amp failed.
  • It's a modeller with 9 preamps and 8 IRs preloaded. Using the software editor from the website you can load in and out your own IRs as well.
  • Has basic effects (chorus or phase, delay & reverb) that are at least usable.
  • Runs for 6 hours on it's built in rechargeable battery.
  • Has Bluetooth so you can play music from your phone or other device through the output. Makes it easy for buskers or practice with backing tracks.
  • Headphone socket, works as USB soundcard, and a dedicated output for recording to phones (presume iPhone), see the back picture below and cables it comes with.
  • Has 3 modes, Preset where you can recall one of 3 saved configurations, Edit for editing said presets, and Live where you can use it as a multi-fx switching in/out the preamp on the right, whatever combination of modulation and delay is set up on the middle switch, and the reverb/IR on the left switch.
  • Also has a E-A-D-G-B-e tuner that works perfectly acceptably as well.
Uses Micro USB ports on the back

And it is tiny and will fit in pretty much all gig bags or guitar cases. Here it is next to my old Boss Delay for a perspective.

I can't say this competes with Fractal, Line6, Kemper etc as I don't have access to those to compare them and I doubt it does given the price difference, certainly not on the level of tone shaping those things provide. What it does, is sound pretty good in it's own right, and while I'm going to keep using my amp and effects, I would not be worried about the sound quality if I had to plug this in as my backup.

It's great for practice plugged into the Aux of my Boss Microcube and actually means two people can jam using it, one through the Boss' modelling, the other using the Lekato, making it great for teaching my son.

I am still playing with it and will get around to recording using it at some point but would seriously consider using it at some band rehearsals for convenience.

I came across this looking at Lekato Wireless systems and for the money thought it was worth a punt. So glad I did!

This stuff is going to be nuts in like the next 10 years. It seems like every 6 months, the tech gets better.

I was looking at @Mark Wein's battery powered backup/portable board thread before I bought this. This is obviously not going to have the same versatility as that rig but 3 presets and a tuner and a built in battery for this money is ridiculously good.

Yeah. It's amazing how good it is all getting. I have no problems with not using traditional amps anymore. And I'm playing probably 100-120 gigs a year in various settings.

I only really need a clean and dirt sound, with various effects now and then. What I love about these things, is I always get tired of the same clean or dirty tone. I would end up flipping an amp that wasn't bad and I liked it, for something different. Now, if I get tired or a Vox type amp, I can flip to a Fender for a while. If I get tired of a Plexi, let's hit a Mesa Boogie for a little while. I may borrow my friend's Fryette Power station to see how it sounds through a neutral tube power section.

I keep coming back to the same couple of amps for gigging but I'm always messing with the other stuff. It's pretty fun. I'm really looking forward to the next FM9 update with the gapless switching and the new reverbs.

I've noticed some amps sound better with different guitars and I mean same basic amp. Like the Morgan AC20 sounds better with my tele, but the Matchless DC 30 sounds better with my Fralin twangmaster equipped Strat. They are both takes on the Vox sound, but they work better with different guitars. I've noticed similar things with Marshall/Friedman/Splawn models.

I think that's the same as with amps in the real word, too. I've always liked my Deluxe because it work well with just about anything but not every amp was like that. Thats why I got rid of my Vox AC50 and TopHat Ambassador among other things.

Just got round to downloading the editor and playing with it. Turns out the original name is Cuvave and Lekato is a rebrand so it was a little awkward to find as there wasn't a web address in the manual.

Download website is here: http://www.cuvave.com/appdownload

Editor is really simple/basic but does the job. You need the manual in front of you though to know what the various IR cabs and the amp models are.

Not tried any different IRs yet as still experimenting to see what I can do with it from the factory as it stands.

Sounds interesting, but I forget: does £36 equal 12 hogsheads, 49 kilometers, or 20 Newtons?

Seriously, though - modeling stuff is getting scary cheap and good. I have a tiny Positive Spark Go that’s so easy to get good sounds from I hardly ever play through an amp at home anymore.

Thread resurrection time!

I've been happy with the Cube Baby as a home practice tool and emergency backup when gigging for some time now, but I finally got around to trying out some 3rd party IRs in it this afternoon. I used some IRs out of the Bogren Digital Free IR pack which I had downloaded ages ago after finding you can get it by signing up to their mailing list.

It is like night and day, with a much fuller sound. These are aimed at metal players apparently but I'm playing rock and blues type stuff and the ones I'm using seem fine to me.

Overall, I'm even happier with the Cube Baby as a purchase now and it proves the amp modeling isn't bad at all.

Now to resist the temptation to go down a rabbit hold and explore every free IR out there!

The right IR makes a huge difference. The only thing better is a real guitar cab.

I use my Katana Go through headphones for quiet practice. So, the speaker sims are a given. But, I turn the IR’s off in my ToneX One and feed it through my 50 watt Fryette Power Station PS2 into real cabs. The difference between that and real amps is subtle.

Nice! I actually ordered these when it first came out and I hated it. Maybe I should try it again.
Did you ever try any 3rd party IRs when you got it? I thought with the fiddling I'd done with the stock ones it sounded pretty good but putting these free IRs in has made a massive improvement.

I've set it up to have clean, crunch and dirt sounds. The clean and dirt sounds I'm pretty happy with but the crunch is where I wish I had better EQ options rather than just a single tone control. It's ok, but not quite as good as the other 2.
